Now that your braces have moved your teeth into their new alignment, you will need to wear a retainer in San Jose, California. This will help you keep your teeth in their perfect alignment while they get used to their new positions. Most people need to use a retainer for about the same amount of time it took for their braces to realign their teeth.
Here at Phan Orthodontics, the most common type of retainer we prescribe is known as a Hawley retainer. Should your Hawley retainer be bent or damaged, your teeth could come out of alignment, which would increase the amount of time you need to wear the retainer.
A good habit to have is to keep your retainer case with you at all times. If you need to take your retainer out of your mouth to eat, you should keep it in the case rather than a napkin or a plastic bag. To refresh your retainer, you can soak it in a mixture of one-half antiseptic mouthwash and one-half cold water. You can also brush your Hawley retainer twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to refresh it and remove any residual plaque.
If you have questions about how to clean and maintain your new Hawley retainer, or if your retainer is damaged in some way, you should call Phan Orthodontics at 408.251.7901 for advice or to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist, Dr. Derick Phan.
