Cavities and problems with your periodontal health can cause significant complications when you have braces. This could alter the tension on your braces and potentially increase the amount of time it takes to fully correct the alignment of your teeth.
Extra focus on your daily oral hygiene routine can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy mouth while keeping the alignment process to the bare minimum. To aid in this effort Dr. Derick Phan might recommend adding some special oral hygiene tools to your oral hygiene repertoire.
Interdental brushes are very helpful for cleaning in and around braces hardware. They have small angled brush heads that can help remove plaque and food particles from hard to reach places. They are especially helpful for getting small food particles out bands and spacers.
Sometimes braces hardware can make it hard to floss along the gumline. A special loop-shaped tool called a floss threader with waxed dental floss can help insert the strand under wires and around braces hardware.
A Waterpik® or other brand of water flosser creates a concentrated stream of water that can help clean food debris from your gumline and the contours created by braces hardware. Keep in mind that it is not an effective alternative for dental floss.
